Sage 5 as a Node Editor

Hello Rob - Great to see you are back around and developing Sagelight!

One program I have been investigating lately for video editing is called Davinci Resolve. It is a node-based editor. I have come to really like the node-based editing idea and how easy it is to effectively undo something that would be several steps back in the undo history by simply deactivating a node, but maintain all the other changes you have done before AND after that node (point in the undo history). I'm not sure if you are familiar with Resolve. If not, you should check out its 'color' page and its node-based editing via some YouTube videos.

I point this out because I have subsequently seen many people online who yearn for a node-based photo editor (as opposed to video editor). Now, I am not a programmer so me asking for one is certainly the easy part but I would ask that you give thought to the idea. I think this would reposition Sagelight as a major new player for people to try. Again, I have no idea what that means programmatically on your end but I figured that the hard work of the photo editing algorithms are already in Sagelight, so now it would be an issue of allowing people to apply them as nodes.

Anyway, just an idea for your consideration. Thanks for making Sagelight and for coming back to it!

Seems like that would be impossible, when you take into account that someone can resize, rotate, and crop an image. Sagelight does have a nice undo history already, but you can only undo the most recent changes first!

I just looked at Davinci Resolve. It's got some interesting ideas, for sure. I've thought about doing something similar, where you can use the Quick Edit Controls, save it as a layer, and then do another one and another one -- these would be about the same thing.

Since Saglelight has a lot of other functions that act as filters / external applications (like the Bokeh, etc.), this is when it would get broken because it effectively went to an external program and came back. That's one of the main differences between, say, Sagelight and Lightroom.

I've been meaning to find a better way to differentiate the idea of a filter vs. the 50 or so layers in the Quick Edit mode so that part is more clear -- I don't think the effect of the "apply" button is as clear as it could be.

But, one of the things I am looking at adding more sooner than later is a more visual idea of the history, and if you don't do any filters (i.e. go outside of the quick edit mode), I like the idea of being able to do more discrete Quick Edit actions and being able to controls them as layers.

It's really about nomenclature, and how I would like to make it more straightforward. I am glad this came up, because the idea of separating Sagelight into its components is something I've wanted to do, and this does remind me of how I really want to get the history in a more visual & editable format.

Keep in mind, though, that programs like Davinci Resolve are less intensive than Sagelight, for the most part, so there is less to keep track of -- plus, that video on the nodes confused the heck out of me after a while!

What @docfleetwood is describing is a category of visual effects software, called compositing. The most used today is called Foundry's Nuke.

Actually, DaVinci Resolve has a similar node editor, but not in the COLOR tab. Fusion is the main competitor, and Blackmagic incorporated the entire software on the FUSION tab.

As a visual effects artist, I would love to see Sagelight's main algorithms inside visual effects/editing software. One option is to write as a plugin for an API called OpenFX, where most of them are compatible.

It's a lot of work, and have no expectations of that. But if any day you want to explore the area of this visual effect, just shot me an email and will help with what I can/know.

BTW, Rob, I'm a great fan. I went to this forum over and over during those years hoping you were well. I think your color algorithms are magnificent and groundbreaking. Thanks and waiting excitedly for the new Sagelight 5.
